πŸ”– Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Egg: One large egg, fried sunny-side up, or any way you like it!
  • Bacon: Two strips of bacon, turkey bacon can be substituted.
  • Cheese: Use your favorite sliced cheese to add a gooey, cheesy element. I alternate between Swiss cheese and pepper jack.
  • Butter: Salted or unsalted butter to butter the bagel.
  • Avocado: A few slices of avocado add a creamy texture to your bagel sandwich.
  • Hot Sauce: If you like it spicy, drizzle some hot sauce on your sandwich. Tapatio and Cholula are my favorite!
  • Salt & Black Pepper: A dash of salt and pepper to season the egg.

πŸ₯― How to Make A Breakfast Bagel Sandwich

Step 1: Slice two strips of bacon in half to make 4 pieces and fry in a small, non-stick skillet over medium heat. Use a spatula to flip the bacon so that it's crispy on both sides. Remove bacon from pan and drain on paper towels.

  • plain bagel
  • whole wheat bagel

Pro Tip: I know this is a "bagel" breakfast sandwich, but if you are watching your carbs, a quick way to cut them by half is to use an English muffin!

Egg Options

I know what you're thinking, an egg is an egg is an egg, am I right? Although you can use egg beaters, egg whites, or an egg substitute, I'm actually referring to how you cook your egg! Here are some different ways to cook your eggs...

  • fried egg
  • poached egg
  • scrambled eggs
  • sunny-side up: fried on one side only
  • over easy: egg gets flipped, but yolk is still runny
  • over medium: fried egg, cooked on one side, then flipped and cooked until the yolk is somewhere between easy and hard
  • over hard: fried egg, cooked on one side, then flipped and cooked until the yolk is fully cooked
  • boiled eggs

Bacon Alternatives

What could be better in a breakfast sandwich than bacon? Although bacon is pretty hard to beat, you may want to try any of these alternatives from time to time...

  • turkey bacon/sausage
  • breakfast sausage
  • sliced ham
  • meat substitute such as veggie sausage
  • kielbasa
  • and my personal favorite, basturma (Iraqi breakfast sausage)!

Cheeses Options

Cheese, beautiful cheese! There are so many great options out there! Why not try a variety that you haven't tried before from the list below?

  • Swiss cheese
  • cheddar cheese (sharp, medium, or mild)
  • American cheese
  • provolone
  • mozzarella
  • Havarti
  • blue cheese
  • Monterey jack cheese
  • feta cheese
  • halloumi cheese

Spreads & Sauces

Spreads can make all the difference in this breakfast egg sandwich and can transform a dry bagel into a creamy, dreamy experience! Choose from any of the following:

  • butter
  • mayo
  • chimichurri
  • black truffle oil aioli
  • Sriracha aioli
  • macha salsa
  • chili sauce
  • or your favorite hot sauce

Top with Veggies or Herbs

Sorry to interrupt this yummy bagel breakfast sandwich by inserting vegetables into it, but these are totally optional! Some of these choices, however, can take your breakfast bagel sandwich to a whole new level!

  • sliced avocado
  • tomato slices
  • sliced onion
  • sauteed mushrooms
  • fresh or pickled jalapeno rings
  • arugula
  • fresh spinach
  • chopped cilantro
  • basil

πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Recipe FAQs

What can you put on a bagel for breakfast?

A bagel is a great breakfast option that can be served in many ways! You can slather it with butter and jam, or opt for cream cheese and lox. You can also make a breakfast bagel sandwich with eggs, bacon, and cheese!

What goes well with bagels for breakfast?

Bagels are high in carbs, so choosing a side that's high in protein can balance out the meal. Eggs and yogurt are just two such examples. Of course, fresh fruit is a great alternative for breakfast.

How do you pack a bagel sandwich to take it on the go?

A bagel sandwich can be wrapped in butcher paper or paper towels if it will need to be reheated. Otherwise, you can wrap a bagel sandwich in foil, then toss into a quart-sized ziplock bag.

πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ³ Pro Tips

  • If you don't own a toaster or a toaster oven, butter the inside of the bagel and grill it in a skillet, buttered side down, until golden brown.
  • For those with hearty appetites, you can double the amount of eggs, bacon, and cheese.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for a couple of days, after removing the avocado. To reheat, wrap in a paper towel and microwave for 30 to 60 seconds.
