FAQs

Do Meyer lemons produce year round? ›

One great thing about the Meyer lemon is that it can bear fruit almost all year round. It's also quite resilient and can thrive outdoors. It can still do well outdoors during winter so long as the temperature doesn't drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

What is so special about Meyer lemons? ›

The truth is, they're an entirely different breed. Compared to sour Eureka and Lisbon lemons (the varieties you'll find year-round at most grocery stores), Meyer lemons are sweeter and less acidic, with lovely floral undertones.

Do Meyer lemon flowers turn into lemons? ›

Blooms are the Meyer Lemon Tree's promise of future bounty. Each delicate flower has the potential to transform into a juicy lemon, but only if the conditions are just right.

Can I freeze Meyer lemons? ›

Yes, you can. The method is simple, and the result is fabulous. You'll find many uses for frozen lemons, and you can use nearly every part of the fruit in the process. Freezing lemons means you'll always have fresh lemon on hand to add zip to dishes and tang to drinks.

Are coffee grounds good for lemon trees? ›

Citrus trees, such as oranges, lemons, and limes, thrive in slightly acidic soil. Coffee grounds have a mild acidic nature, making them an ideal amendment to help balance the pH levels around your citrus trees.

What month do Meyer lemons ripen? ›

How will I know when they are ready to harvest? Meyer lemons ripen, between November and April. You probably noticed they flowered over a long period of time, and obviously the first fruit to set would be the ones that ripened in November. The fruit will change color as it becomes ripe.

How long does it take for a Meyer lemon tree to bear fruit? ›

The standard-size plant can grow to between six and 10 feet tall, so it can live indoors in most homes, but you can prune it or opt for a dwarf variety if you don't want such a big tree. As for fruit, the Meyer lemon tree should produce citrus every year after it reaches maturity—i.e., around four years old.

Can you eat Meyer lemons raw? ›

Taste – While they're moderately acidic, Meyer lemons don't have the same tang as regular lemons. Instead, they're much sweeter — so much so that some people enjoy adding the raw segments to their salads or desserts.

Why is Meyer lemon so expensive? ›

Meyer lemons are available in stores between December and May. Their limited season and fragile skin (which makes them more difficult to ship) naturally make them more expensive and harder to get your hands on than regular lemons. Though the season may be short, you can easily extend it with the help of your freezer.

Do Meyer lemons need a lot of water? ›

Check on your soil once a week. If it feels dry to the touch 2 inches below the surface, it's time for more water. Slowly pour water into the pot and count to 20, or wait until you see water running out of the bottom of the pot. Generally, Meyer Lemon Trees need water every one to two weeks.

How many times a year does a Meyer lemon tree bloom? ›

Meyer Lemon Trees are the easiest citrus plants to grow indoors and they offer sweet scented blooms and fruit up to 4 times per year.

What is the best fertilizer for a Meyer lemon tree? ›

For Meyer Lemon Trees, you want a mix that doesn't skimp on phosphorus or potassium. A balanced 10-10-10 or 14-7-14 mix can work wonders. But remember, too much nitrogen and your tree might go all leafy on you, at the expense of flowers and fruit.

Do Meyer lemons like full sun? ›

Meyer lemon trees love full sun exposure. Citrus tree care rules dictate that your lemon tree should get at least eight hours of full sunlight daily. If you want to ensure that your fruit trees will bear their signature egg-yolk-colored fruit, allow your Meyer lemon tree to have as much sun as possible year-round.

Can a Meyer lemon tree have too many lemons? ›

Be sure to look at the number of lemons you have growing. In order to prevent fruit overbearing, when your tree starts to fruit, you'll want to remove a few lemons in large clusters when they're pea sized. This will promote the growth of larger lemons when they reach maturity.

How long do Meyer lemons last in the refrigerator? ›

How long lemons last depends on how they're stored. At room temperature, they stay good for about a week. In the fridge, however, their life is lengthened by two to three weeks. That means you can keep store-bought lemons fresh for about one month.

Can Meyer lemons be used for regular lemons? ›

Yes, in most cases. Both Meyer lemons and regular lemons can be used in the same ways. You can juice them for co*cktails, spritzers, or a vinaigrette, and use the pulp or zest for an array of sweet and savory dishes alike. Just remember that regular lemons lack the sweetness of Meyer lemons.
