Virginia Tech’s Hunter Cattoor to play for Cleveland in NBA Summer League; ex-UNC, Duke stars to be teammates (2024)

PRO BASKETBALL

Former Virginia Tech guard Hunter Cattoor signed to play in the NBA Summer League with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where his teammates will include former N.C. State star DJ Burns.

Numerous other familiar players will be on summer-league rosters, according to various reports.

Richmond native Armando Bacot, a former North Carolina star who was undrafted, will join Utah draftee Kyle Filipowski from Duke in a pairing of former rivals as Jazz teammates.

Ex-Virginia guard Reece Beekman, who signed a two-way deal with Golden State, will play for the Warriors. The New Orleans Pelicans’ roster includes former Providence and George Mason post player Josh Oduro. Former Hokies forward Keve Aluma will play for the Philadelphia 76ers. Phoenix first-round draftee Ryan Dunn will play for the Suns.

FOOTBALL RECRUITING

Hokies land top-notch RB from Northern Virginia

Rising senior running back Jeff Overton Jr., a two-time Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year in Virginia, committed to Virginia Tech. The 5-foot-10, 192-pounder led Freedom High of Woodbridge to the state title but now will play for Hayfield, another Northern Virginia school.

According to 247 Sports, Overton chose the Hokies over South Carolina (coached by former Tech player and assistant Shane Beamer), Maryland and Virginia.

Last season with Freedom, he rushed for 2,713 yards and 41 touchdowns, averaging 13 yards per carry. He also caught 15 passes for 341 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, he had 59 tackles and five interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.

By going to Hayfield, he will reunite with his uncle Darryl Overton, who is the Hawks’ new head football coach, and his father, Jeff Sr., who is Hayfield’s new defensive coordinator.

LOCAL BASEBALL

Pilots increase winning streak to six

The Peninsula Pilots stayed sizzling, boosting their winning streak to six games with a 16-6 triumph Friday night over the host Greenville Yard Gnomes.

The Pilots (19-8), who clinched a Coastal Plain League playoff berth last weekend by winning the East Division via a head-to-head tiebreaker with Wilmington, improved to 3-0 in the second half as Carlos Pena, Ryan Dooley and Coleman Calabrese each homered and drove in three runs. Trey Morgan was 3 for 6 with a solo homer, and Corbin Shaw was 2 for 3 with three runs and two walks.

The Yard Gnomes (7-20) went ahead 4-0 in the first inning, but Peninsula dominated the rest of the game. The Pilots broke a 5-5 tie with a five-run seventh inning and pulled away with a six-run ninth.

Marcus Dux pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings of relief for the triumph.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Gloucester trio among all-state picks

Gloucester pitcher Austin Shackelford, first baseman Brayden Enoch and outfielder Dylan Deyoung and Smithfield designated hitter Maddax Brown made the VHSL Class 4 all-state first team. All four are seniors, and Shackelford was the Region A Player of the Year.

The second team included two Churchland Truckers: senior third baseman A.J. Boone and sophom*ore outfielder Cameron Duke.

Dominion senior pitcher and outfielder Cayden Suchy is the Class 4 Player of the Year. Atlee head coach Mike Morris is the Class 4 Coach of the Year.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS LACROSSE

Ocean Lakes player makes first team

Ocean Lakes senior midfielder Summerlin Gates was on the VHSL Class 5 all-state first team. The second team included Bayside junior attacker Carly Gerhardstein and senior defender Jasmine Vaughan, plus two Ocean Lakes seniors: midfielder Molly Ryan Gates and defender Erika Wilson.

HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS

VHSL recognizes state semifinalists

The VHSL recognized all of the players who advanced to the individual singles and doubles semifinals as All-State honorees.

In boys competition, they included singles champions Matthew Onoff of Menchville in Class 5 and Rainer Christiansen of Grafton in Class 4, Christiansen and John Lee in Class 4 doubles and Bruton’s Christoph Schweitzer and Max de Winter in Class 2 doubles.
Singles runners-up Neil Vanga of Cox in Class 5 and Christoph Schweitzer of Bruton in Class 2, plus doubles finalists Vanga and Sam Dixon, also were honored.

Keean Buirski and Charles Aractingi of Jamestown were semifinalists in Class 4 doubles, and Buirski made the singles semis.

In girls competition, Class 5 doubles runners-up Kayla Kennedy and Chase London of Great Bridge were honored, as were Kennedy and Menchville’s Tori Epps as singles semifinalists and Epps and Erin Pridgen as doubles semifinalists.

Jamestown’s Julia Clark missed the Class 4 semifinals because of injury, but she was honored in singles and along with Scarlett Gamez in doubles.

In Class 3, semifinalist honorees included Tabb’s Valentina Crespo in singles and Grafton’s Michelle Cloud and Erin Braganza in doubles. Class 2 doubles semifinalists Meredith Woodruff and Sarah Litton of Poquoson were honored as well.

GOLF

Auburn recruit wins VSGA Amateur title

Logan Reilly, 17, a Northern Virginian who has committed to play for Auburn, won the 111th Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship by winning 4 and 2 over former George Mason player Nikita Gubenko, 22, at Loudoun Golf & Country Club.

Several players with Hampton Roads ties qualified for the match-play bracket of 32 based on 36 holes of stroke play.
Former Christopher Newport star Robb Kinder, Churchland High alum Jonathan McEwen and Yorktown teen Brandon Sipe made the round of 32.

Former Catholic High star Xander Goboy, former Hickory High and Radford golfer Patrick Gareiss and Jamestown High graduates Ryan Leach and Bobby Dudeck III each won a match to advance to the round of 16. Leach will play for West Virginia, and Dudeck has competed for Radford.

COLLEGES

W&M names women’s lacrosse coach

In women’s lacrosse, William & Mary announced that Kelyn Freedman was named the Tribe’s head coach. She was an All-Big East midfielder for Georgetown early last decade and has been an assistant coach for the Hoyas, Towson, Niagara and George Washington.

Old Dominion’s men’s soccer program, under first-year head coach Tennant McVea, announced a 16-game regular-season schedule including eight home matches.

The Monarchs will play a 5 p.m. home exhibition Aug. 10 against UNC Wilmington and will start the regular season at 1 p.m. Aug. 22 at George Washington. The Monarchs’ home opener will be at 4 p.m. Sept. 1 against Radford.
